Team Cleveland prepares for the Big Apple
by Bill Podojil
At the end of August, the members of Team Cleveland met to discuss the future of Cleveland area athletes at Gay Games IV. While interest has not been too enthusiastic, there are some very committed athletes and non-athletes that want to see Cleveland represented well in New York.
The Games, scheduled to run from June 18-25 in New York City, are expected to attract more than 20,000 participants and 500,000 spectators. The end of the Games I will see the celebration of Stonewall 25. Nearly one million gays and lesbians will crowd the Big Apple for what may be the biggest celebration of athleticism, gay culture and pride.
Team Cleveland's role will be to direct athletes to the appropriate organizations. For example, cyclists will be directed to the Cleveland Cyclones, runners will be directed to Frontrunners, softball and volleyball to the NCAA, and so on. The other function Team Cleveland hopes to fulfill is to act as an information center for travel, athlete packets, uniforms and identity.
Hotel rooms have been booked for months by gay travel agencies and must be acquired through them. Luckily, many rooms were bought in advance, because the International Soccer Championships are being held
in New York during the same week, making rooms scarce. Also, there are discount airfares being offered and Team Cleveland is looking into chartering a bus to the Games.
Registration and travel expenses are to be handled by the participants. Team Cleveland will not be responsible for sending any athletes or be involved in major fundraising to alleviate the expenses. In talking with other teams around the country, Team Cleveland board members found that many organizations that funded athletes wound up in the red. The exact registration fee has not yet been determined, but is expected to be less than $100.
Gay Games IV Organizing Committee will be sending athlete registration packets to the teams at the end of September. To obtain a packet, please send a written request to Team Cleveland, care of the Gay People's Chronicle. Your packet will then be mailed to you shortly. If you desire to obtain one yourself, you may do so by contacting the Gay Games headquarters. Their address and phone number is: Gay Games IV Organizing Committee, 19 West 21st St., Suite 1202, New York, NY 10011.
Phone numbers: volunteering, registration, general information, 212-633-9494; merchandise, 800-622-0066; travel, 800368-8412.

Devotion! Longings that make you ache! That note she wrote! The chain he wore! Their ashes! I can hardly bear it!
...I kept picturing Sam Shepard and RuPAUL.
